Materials I choose and why.

Materials are one of the most important aspects of my work. I spend countless hours and make multiple experiments to make sure that the ones I choose are the best fit. At the beginning my material of choice was stoneware due to its unpretentiousness - it barely cracks and is very easy to work with. But it lacks durability and water-resistance. So it always has to be glazed in order to maintain functionality. And the finish of the surface is rather dull, the white is not as crispy and the black is not as deep.

It was the time to up my game.

Now my main material is white or colored porcelain. It is much trickier and more demanding than stoneware. Porcelain doesn't forgive any tiny mistreatment; it cracks in the kiln if it wasn't treated tenderly enough. But the reward is great as well. It is 100% waterproof meaning that, even unglazed, its surface is impermeable to liquids and resistant to stains and marks. Exceptional qualities of the material make the piece long-lasting, which is crucial as I wish these items to become your long-term companions.

Aesthetically, porcelain is rather special too. I instantly fell in love with its texture, purity of color and translucency. Often I leave it unglazed, thanks to its soothing soft texture and bright clean colors.

The porcelain I use is locally produced right outside Barcelona and has perfect water resistance; this is what allows me to leave it unglazed and expose its inherent texture. White porcelain has this magical translucency that makes a mundane functional object become almost magical and glowing from the inside.

Other materials that I often use are brass, golden mirror and natural flax rope. I find it particularly delightful when paired with softness and purity of porcelain that can sometimes be perceived as cold. So a warm shiny detail and a rustic natural touch balances it nicely.

I care deeply about the sustainability aspect of the materials I choose and ensure that everything I use in the process of making (and packaging and shipping) is ethical and recyclable.
